WHAT DOES FASTING MEAN? Fasting a voluntary abstinence from food (Vines), and fleshly activities for spiritual purposes.  It was an accepted part of the religious duty among the Jewish people in the days of Christ, and was continued among Christians; the Hebrew word tsoom means "to cover over" as pertaining to the mouth. Websters defines it "to abstain from food, beyond the usual time; to omit to take the usual meals, for a time; as, to fast a day or a week; to abstain from food voluntarily, for the mortification of the body or appetites, or as a token of grief, sorrow and affliction; to abstain from food partially, or from particular kinds of food

  • From looking at scripture, we can see that fasting means NOT CONSUMING FOOD – NOT EATING

  • We Fast for a limited period of time as a mark of our commitment and devotion for as an expression of repentance for sins.

  • Fasting is only affective with spending dedicated time in prayer and in the Word of God.

  • Our purpose and focus of our fast is God (Zechariah 7:5; Acts 13:2).

  • Individuals should not fast for the wrong\incorrect reasons ie. to loose weight

  • Our fasting must be directed towards God if we are awaiting Him to bless us.

The SIgnificance of Fasting

  • Adam and Eve's disobedience was a result of food.

  • Esau sold his birthright for bread and pottage of lentils (Gen. 3:6-7; 25:31-33).

  • The children of Israel tempted God by a lust for food (Ps. 106:14-15).

  • Christians must realize that one must have a PURPOSE for fasting - In other words, don't fast just to be fasting. What are you seeking God for?

  • Fasting for direction, healing, or dealing with a demonic spirit (Isa. 58:4-12; Acts 13:2; 9:9; Matt. 17:14-21).

  • Fasting is a much-needed disciple in the life of a believer where we empty ourselves spiritually physically for the Holy Spirit to pour in afresh.

  • Fasting MUST be accompanied with prayer – taking time to listen to the Holy Spirit.

  • Fasting helps to overcome the devil in many areas (Luke 4:1-13).

  • Jesus faced the same temptations as Adam and Eve, yet He overcame through fasting.

  • Fasting will give men power over the temptations of the flesh.

  • Daniel overcame the Prince of Persia through fasting and prayer (Dan. 10:2-5, 12-14).

  • Fasting and Prayer will also destroy and break the ungodly powers of darkness and bind up and unbelief.

  • To prepare for ministry – Jesus spent forty days and nights in the wilderness fasting and praying before He began God’s work on this earth. He needed time alone to prepare for what His Father had called Him to do  (Matthew 4:1-17).

  • To seek God’s wisdom -  Paul and Barnabas prayed and fasted for the elders of the churches before committing them to the Lord for His service (Acts 14:23).

  • Daniel overcame the Prince of Persia through fasting and prayer (Dan. 10:2-5, 12-14).

  • Fasting and Prayer will also destroy and break the ungodly powers of darkness and bind up and unbelief.
